Grade Configuration Steering Committee Minutes

Jan. 23, 2017: Succesful urban schools

  • Brief welcome with each committee member re-introducing themselves and providing their motivation for serving on the committee

  • Review and approval of last months minute's

  • Review of previous meetings and presentations by Dr. Butterworth

  • Review data on the current racial composition of the district's elementary and middle schools

    • Focused on the racial composition of the magnet schools in particular, which would be relevant to later discussion

  • Presentation by Dr. Butterworth and Dr. Bashant on their research on successful urban schools, available here

    • Distinction between district-wide and neighborhood schools

      • Forced bussing and magnet schools presented as district-wide options

      • Neighborhood and community schools presented as neighborhood options

  • Discussion of presentation

  • Time allotted for observer questions

  • Reminder that this was the final informational presentation, and that next month begins the deliberation process

  • Meeting ended slightly ahead of schedule, and the committee agreed to adjourn for the evening due to the inclement weather
