Grade Configuration Steering Committee Minutes

March 27, 2017: Continuing discussion of facilities and beginning to discuss enrollment patterns

  • Review of norms

  • Approval of minutes from last month's meeting

  • Review of last month's meeting by Dr. Jim Butterworth

  • Review of the research on the comparable effectiveness of large and small middle schools led by Dr. Butterworth

  • Continuation of last month's discussion on facilities, which is essentially a question of having three larger middle schools or four smaller ones

    • The committee requested specific financial estimates for the cost of each scenario and expects to make its final facilities decision at next month's meeting

  • Began initial discussion of enrollment patterns, which can be done through one of three ways; magnet lotteries, neighborhood schools or feeder patterns, which is the current system in use

    • The committee authorized staff to investigate possible feeder groups for both the and four middle school scenarios based off of an equal distribution of elementary schools to each according to their performance on state testing

  • Discussion of the time frame for the remaining work, with the possibility of an additional meeting being raised again

  • Time allotted for observer comments, but none were present
