Winter guard aces first competition

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 1, 2010) The Albany Marching Falcons Winter Guard, one of the newest teams in the City School District of Albany, captured a first place Saturday at its first formal competition.

Winter guard is an indoor activity based on color guard – the flag-twirling brigades that accompany marching bands in parades during warmer weather. When the parades stop, color guard brings the activity inside and winter guard comes into its own. Teams design unique routines set to music and their performance is judged on artistic flair, precision and coordination.

Twenty students in grades six through 12 comprise Albany’s team, which formed in 2008 under the direction of Amanda Marshall. Saturday’s victory took place at the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit Invitational at Shenendehowa High School.

The team’s next meet is at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Laurens High School in Laurens, just north of Oneonta.

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and nurture all students to be responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners to successfully compete in the global community by providing an academically rigorous and safe environment in partnership with parents, students and the community. The district serves approximately 8,400 students in 16 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students.
