Albany High jazz shines at area competition

ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2017) -- Albany High School jazz musicians played and sang their way to silver ratings on Feb. 16 at the 13th Annual Fonda-Fultonville Jazz Festival.

 

Albany High fielded a total of 22 members in two jazz ensembles under the direction of John Halvorsen. They competed against 15 area school groups in the annual contest, held at Fonda-Fultonville High School.  

 

The Albany High B Flats performed Watermelon Man, Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You and Pent Up House.

 

The Jazzmanian Devils – who earned the Best Rhythm Section Award – performed Seven Steps To Heaven, Autumn Leaves and A Night In Tunisia.

 

Individual All-Star awards also were presented to the following Albany High ensemble members:

  • Matan Adler, piano

  • Ian Gutierrez, guitar

  • Noah John, clarinet

  • Aaron Shields, drums

  • Alexandra Sipos, vocals

  • Austin Smith, guitar

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and prepare all students for college and career, citizenship and life, in partnership with our diverse community. The district serves more than 9,600 students in 17 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students, including four themed academies at Albany High School.
