Explore themed magnet programs at four open houses

ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec. 28, 2016) --  Four open houses in January will give families the opportunity to explore unique elementary-school options available to all Albany children.

The open houses will be held at magnet programs in the City School District of Albany. A magnet school or program focuses on a particular theme and incorporates that theme across all subject areas. All magnet programs are enrolled by lottery and open to children throughout the city.

The schedule follows:

Monday, Jan. 9

Bilingual Dual-Language Program at Delaware Community School, 43 Bertha St.

10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.

The Dual-Language Program offers an elementary-school education in both Spanish and English. Children enter the program speaking one of the two languages, and they leave speaking, reading and writing in both.

Tuesday, Jan. 10

Albany School of Humanities (ASH), 108 Whitehall Road

9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.

ASH explores global citizenship through the study of visual arts, literature, music and theater arts. Students participate in year-long activities that incorporate the humanities into daily teaching and learning.

Wednesday, Jan. 11

Montessori Magnet School, 45 Tremont St.

9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.

Montessori Magnet School seeks to educate students in a way that incorporates all five senses, creates a warm and inviting community and encourages students to give their best efforts.

Thursday, Jan. 12

Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST), Lincoln Park

9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.

At TOAST, learning strategies reflect and reinforce approaches that drive the development of science and technology: curiosity, discovery, observation, problem-solving, inquiry and creativity.

Admission to each program will be determined through two lotteries: one for prekindergarten students and one for older students. Families need to apply for the lotteries, which will be held April 11.

Applications will become available Jan. 9 online, at the individual schools and at the district’s Central Registration Office, located at Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center, 75 Watervliet Ave. Prekindergarten lottery applications will be available March 1.
