About Delaware Community School
Formerly Public School 18, Delaware Community School is the City School District of Albany's only school offering a bilingual education program, the Dual Language Program, which teaches students in both English and Spanish. The original P.S. 18 was razed and rebuilt as Delaware Community School, which opened in 2007.

The 50,000-square-foot building serves approximately 470 students and features space for parent and community groups to meet. Some other features include modern art and music rooms, a state-of-the-art library/media center, a cafetorium and a larger gymnasium, and a playground.

The school's mission is to provide an environment in which students can achieve their academic potential through the development of self-confidence, self-discipline and creativity.

News and information

  • Literature comes alive during Literacy Week -- It was a literary "who's who" at Delaware Community School on March 16 -- “Living Literature Day,” when students and staff dressed as and took on the personas of their favorite book characters. Spotted from the real world were Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley and Malala Yousafzai. From the fiction side were doctors, dragons, police officers, princesses and several superheroes. Harry Potter, Huckleberry Finn and Fancy Nancy also were there, along with a menagerie that included Fly Guy, the Cat in the Hat, Pete the Cat, Charlotte and Wilbur and the Grouchy Ladybug. Living Literature Day is part of the school's Literacy Week Celebration. Click here to see a Facebook album of photos. (You don’t need a Facebook account to view the photos. A window may display the text “To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log in or create an account,” but this can be dismissed by clicking “not now.”)

  • Donation provides bilingual literacy boost -- Delaware Community School received an incredibly generous gift June 10 when Ocean State Job Lot delivered more than 10,100 books! There were 6,499 books in Spanish and 3,625 books in English. The donation has an estimated value of about $250,000! Please visit our District News section to read more and for a link to more photos.
