Albany winter guard teams nail regionals

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 3, 2017) -- The three City School District of Albany teams that competed Saturday in the Mid-York Color Guard Championship each medaled in their division, with the varsity team bringing home the gold.

Both the Novice (modified) and Cadet (JV) teams earned silver in their respective divisions at the competition, held at Shenendehowa High School. The Scholastic Regional A (varsity) team went on to take the gold and substantially outscore their opponents.

Winter guard is an indoor activity based on color guard – the flag and saber-tossing brigades that accompany marching bands in parades during warmer weather. When cold weather arrives, the activity moves inside and becomes winter guard. Teams design unique routines set to music and their performances are judged on artistic flair, precision and coordination.

Albany's teams are made up of students from Albany High School, Albany School of Humanities, Giffen Memorial Elementary School, Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School and William S. Hackett Middle School.

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and prepare all students for college and career, citizenship and life, in partnership with our diverse community. The district serves more than 9,600 students in 17 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students, including four themed academies at Albany High School.
