The start of the winter season for Albany High School’s high-risk winter sports -- boys’ and girls’ basketball, and competitive cheer -- is on hold pending additional guidance from the Albany County Health Department.
The county determined this week that these high-risk winter sports cannot start on Feb. 1 as initially hoped due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. County Executive Daniel McCoy has indicated a desire to move forward with the high-risk sports once positivity rates and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decline.
Informational meeting Sunday
Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Ashley Chapple has scheduled a virtual meeting Sunday at 3 p.m. to provide additional updates and answer questions from student-athletes and families interested in basketball and cheerleading.
You can attend the Google Meet using this link and also submit questions in advance of the meeting via Google Forms. Sign in with each student-athlete’s district Google credentials.
Registration continues
Registration remains open for Albany High’s basketball and competitive cheer teams, and we will provide more information about the start of those seasons once the county provides updated guidance.
Student-athletes interested in basketball players and cheerleading should continue with the registration process using the Final Forms online platform. This will ensure that our student-athletes are prepared to try out and begin practicing should the county greenlight these sports. An introduction to Final Forms can be found here.
