The City School District of Albany Board of Education has appointed veteran athletic administrator Kimberly L. Pilla to serve as the district’s new director of health, physical education and athletics.
Pilla, who currently serves as assistant director of physical education and health in the Schenectady City School District, will begin in Albany on July 16. She replaces interim director Steve Boynton, who has led the department for the past year.
A Newburgh native, Pilla spent the first 22 years of her career as a physical education teacher in the Beacon City School District, serving at both the elementary and high school levels. She also coached varsity basketball and soccer during that time.
She moved into her first administrative role as director of athletics, physical education and health in the Onteora Central School District from 2017-21. She served as a substitute building leader in the Monticello Central School District in 2021-22 before moving to her current role in Schenectady.
In that role for the past year and a half, Pilla has supervised more than 40 health and physical education teachers. She also has collaborated with the director of athletics to implement intramural programs, as well as programs in partnership with community organizations such as Fuel Up and Special Olympics.
She also serves on Schenectady’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Infrastructure Team, and its Anti-Racism Leadership Team.
Pilla earned a bachelor's degree in education from the State University of New York at Cortland, a master’s in education from Mount St. Mary’s College and a certificate in educational administration from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
