Historic milestone: Azera Gates joins the 1,000-point club!

Azera Gates with teammates, coaches and fans

Albany High senior Azera Gates made history Jan. 14 when she became just the sixth member of the girls' basketball program to reach 1,000 career points.

A four-year starter, Gates achieved this impressive feat by sinking a foul shot in the second quarter during the Falcons' game at Colonie, prompting Falcon fans to erupt with excitement!

The first Falcon to reach 1,000 points in her varsity career was Tonya Hansen, Class of 1988. Additional members of Albany High's 1,000-point club are:

  • Carolyn Gottstein Gannon (Class of 2000) -- School-record 2,020 points
  • Rebecca Gottestein Holden (Class of 1998)
  • Emia Willingham-Hurst (Class of 2013)
  • Ahniysha Jackson (Class of 2020)

The Falcons (8-3) return to action with an away game at Schenectady on Friday, Jan. 24 -- and with another milestone achievement in sight. Coach Decky Lawson will be going for his 200th career win, second all-time on the school's list of coaching victories behind Leslie Bogucki (214).

Let's go Falcons!
