Summer school begins Monday, July 8
Student works inspired by the famed modern art collection at the Empire State Plaza will be showcased March 2-18 in the plaza’s South Concourse.
And a reception to honor participating students will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 in the South Plaza Concourse. Students, families and friends are welcome. (District art teachers are pictured at right during last year's reception.)
More than 350 pieces of art by City School District of Albany students from kindergarten through eighth grade will be on display at the plaza in celebration of National Youth Art Month. The exhibit consists of artwork from all 15 district elementary and middle schools, the Albany International Center and Tony Clement Center for Education, as well artwork from 17 other Capital Region school districts.
On display are student reinterpretations of the modern masters whose works are featured on the walls and in the spaces of the plaza.
The Empire State Plaza Art Collection consists of 92 modern art paintings, sculptures and tapestries that were bought in the late 1960s to early ’70s, including works from Alexander Calder, Franz Kline, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.
The South Concourse is off the Madison Avenue entrance to the plaza, near the New York State Museum.
The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and prepare all students for college and career, citizenship and life, in partnership with our diverse community. The district serves approximately 9,500 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students, including four themed academies at Albany High School.
