Summer school begins Monday, July 8
Get rid of those deposit bottles and support the Albany Marching Falcons’ efforts to raise money for their June trip to France to participate in the official parade and other activities honoring the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
“Many of us have someone in our family that served in World War II, and in June we will make the journey to France and pay a musical tribute to the Greatest Generation as a thank you for their sacrifices,” said Bryan Cady, director of the Marching Falcons.
You can drop off the bottles at Capital Redemption Center, located at 610 Clinton Ave. It’s open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-noon weekends. When you make the drop-off, please ask that proceeds be donated to the Albany Marching Falcons.
The Albany Marching Falcons are the City School District of Albany’s marching band and color guard. The group is made up of district students in grades 6 through 12.
Their journey will take them to Paris and Caen, the capital of Normandy. They'll tour sights in Paris on June 5, then travel to Caen. On June 6, the group will march along Omaha Beach from Vierville-sur-Mer to St. Laurent-sur-Mer, two towns liberated during the Normandy invasion by American and Allied forces. They'll also participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Normandy American cemetery, In addition, the group will perform several times in Caen.
The group will be the only school district marching band representing the United States at the festivities. Between performances, the group will tour various monuments and historical sites.
"For this generation of students, World War II is an event largely resigned to movies and textbooks. By taking this trip, the Marching Falcons will live in history," Cady said.
