Five cadets in Albany High School's Sgt. Henry Johnson Battalion Junior ROTC have been selected to attend American Legion Boys State this summer.
“This is a first for Albany High School, and I believe a first for any public school in Albany County,” said Retired Army Maj. David Erickson, Albany High’s JROTC instructor.
The students are Enrique DeJesus, Prince Ndihano, Shadrack Nsengiyumva, Pratik Saha and Dennis Tanguid.
Boys State is a week-long program that immerses high school students in citizenship and leadership training. Students also learn the workings of local, county and state government, and they participate in physical fitness, teamwork and other activities under the guidance of American Legion counselors and U.S. Marines. Boys State programs exist in every U.S. state except Hawaii.
New York’s Boys State will be held from June 27-July 2 at SUNY Morrisville State College in Morrisville.
The Albany High students were interviewed earlier this month, and all were selected by North Albany Post 1610 of the American Legion. Their trip is being sponsored by Post 1610 and supported by Wigand VFW Post 8444, Gold Star Mothers and the Marine Corps League.
Thanks to our community supporters, and congratulations to the five students! Pictured from left, they are Saha, Ndihano, Tanguid, Nsengiyumva and DeJesus.
