Wellness Policy update
I am writing to provide you with helpful information regarding the City School District of Albany’s Wellness Policy, which seeks to create an environment where healthy eating and physical activity are encouraged for all of our 9,600 students.
Our Wellness Policy was developed in 2006 and revised in 2015. The Board of Education now is in the process of reviewing and updating it. The board’s Policy Committee is scheduled to discuss the Wellness Policy at its meeting Wednesday, Nov. 8. The meeting will be held at the Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center, 75 Watervliet Ave., at 5:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Please note that the Policy Committee also has a meeting scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23; the Wellness Policy will not be discussed at that time.
While the board is working through that process, please note that the implementation of any recent changes to our policy that have been communicated will not occur. We will await the outcome of the board’s policy review and provide additional guidance then. We anticipate that the board will adopt an updated Wellness Policy later this school year.
You can read the entire Wellness Policy in our BoardDocs section. Click on the Policies section; the Wellness Policy is 5405 in the Student Policies 5000 series.
Please review the policy at home and talk with your students about the importance of making healthy choices and being active. I encourage you to talk with your principal if you have questions about any aspect of our Wellness Policy. You also can download this letter. Thank you for your assistance.
Yours in education,
Kaweeda G. Adams
Superintendent of Schools
