On the morning of Sept. 11, we experienced a racially motivated incident at Eagle Point Elementary School. I am writing to inform you of this incident, and also to reassure you that any behavior of this type absolutely will not be tolerated anywhere in the City School District of Albany.
Shortly after the start of the school day on Sept. 11, one of our prekindergarten teachers reported to the principal that she had discovered a hateful message in a typed note. Based on the way the teacher discovered the note, we have not been able to immediately determine where it came from. We are continuing to investigate this matter in partnership with our district security staff, our legal counsel and our partners at Advanced Therapy, which operates our pre-K classrooms at Eagle Point.
We are asking anyone that has any information about this matter to contact our district security director, Jack Grogan, immediately at (518) 857-5999.
Please also know that we are committed throughout our school district to working to provide safe, supportive schools and offices where everyone – students, staff, families, visitors and our community partners – can learn and work to their fullest potential in an environment where diversity and inclusion are the norm. This incident demonstrates why the work we do is so important. Equity in education through a culturally responsive lens is critical to the success of our students, families, faculty and staff, and our entire community.
Sincerely,
Kaweeda G. Adams
Superintendent
