Perspectives in Online Learning: Joe Burke

Joe Burke

Home school coordinator
Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School

"In my 16 years at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School, I have had the opportunity to learn and work with some wonderful people. As a home school coordinator (HSC) I lend support to the administrative team and my responsibilities include discipline, attendance, transportation and family engagement - all of this has shifted a bit due to the closure."

"The online learning has redirected my time and working space, and I have spent mornings for the past 12 weeks delivering meals to our students throughout the district. Our food service staff has been incredible in this project. My days continue by supporting the Myers administrative team. In the early stages of the closure, that meant delivering Chromebooks and internet hot spots to our students to ensure our kids can connect with their teachers and finish the academic year strong. Most recently, as our year comes to a close, we are spending time reconnecting kids with the personal belongings they had left in the building on March 13."

"Most of all, distance learning has given me an opportunity to engage with even more families and meet and work with district staff who I may not have met otherwise. I have also gained a greater appreciation for the dedication and patience that our teachers have displayed with the adjusted work during this difficult time. Physically, my HSC role has changed some of the things I am doing, but the primary tenet of the job will always be that of the liaison between the home and the school - with or without a Pause."

"I would also like to say congratulations to the Myers admin team (Andrea Piper, Brianna Olsen and Scott Thompson) for the courage and the strength to endure this change in momentum in just their first year at Myers."
