Dec. 20 COVID-19 cases

The City School District of Albany was notified Monday of 18 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. All the individuals and their unvaccinated contacts are quarantining at home.

Six cases involve Albany High School:

  • The first individual was last in school Dec. 17 and the second individual was last in school Dec. 16. The Albany County Health Department identified no additional contacts with either of the cases.
  • The third and fourth individuals both are associated with 10th grade and were last in school Dec. 10. The health department identified no additional contacts with either of the cases.
  • The fifth individual is associated with ninth grade and was last in school Dec. 16. The health department identified 20 additional contacts with the case; of those, 18 are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.
  • The sixth individual is associated with 10th grade and was last in school Dec. 17. The health department identified 11 contacts with the case; of those, nine are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

Three cases involve Eagle Point Elementary School:

  • The first individual is associated with fourth grade and was last in school Dec. 14. The Albany County Health Department identified six additional contacts with the case; all are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.
  • The second individual is associated with third grade and was last in school Dec. 10. The health department identified no additional contacts with the case.
  • The third individual is associated with kindergarten and was last in school Dec. 10. The health department identified no additional contacts with the case.

Two cases involve Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School. Both individuals were last in school Dec. 17.

  • The health department identified seven additional contacts with the first individual; of those, three are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.
  • The second individual is associated with eighth grade. The health department identified four additional contacts with the case; all are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

One case involves fourth grade at Albany International Center, and the individual was last in school Dec. 20. The health department identified five additional contacts with the case; two are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

One case involves Edmund J. O’Neal School of Excellence, and the individual was last in school Dec. 17. The health department identified 28 additional contacts with the case; of those, 17 are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

One case involves Giffen Memorial Elementary School. The individual was last in school Dec. 17. The health department identified seven additional contacts with the case; one is vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

One case involves Montessori Magnet School, and the individual was last in school Dec. 15. The health department identified one additional contact with the case who is vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

One case involves second grade at Pine Hills Elementary School, and the individual was last in school Dec. 17. The health department identified 10 additional contacts with the case; of those, three are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

One case involves William S. Hackett Middle School, and the individual was last in school on Dec. 17. The health department identified six additional contacts; of those, four are vaccinated and not required to quarantine.

Monday’s 18th and final case involves an individual on a First Student bus serving Myers and Sheridan Preparatory Academy. The individual was last at both schools on Dec. 16. The health department identified 19 additional contacts with the case; all are in quarantine.

Health and safety procedures at all district buildings continue to include cleaning and sanitizing. We will continue with these procedures, and also will continue to follow all required COVID-19 precautions (wearing masks inside all district buildings, hand hygiene, social distancing of 3 feet or more in all classrooms, and other precautions).

We also would like to remind everyone of steps you can take to help be safe:

  1. Maintain social distance at all times from those you don’t live with.
  2. Always wear a mask that covers both the mouth and nose when inside at school or when your student is riding a bus to or from school.
  3. Wash hands with soap and water frequently when out of your home. If you cannot use soap and water, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  4. Don’t touch the eyes, nose or mouth unless your hands are clean.
  5. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL WHEN THEY ARE SICK OR HAVE SYMPTOMS:
  • Signs of COVID-19 are: fever, fatigue/tiredness, muscle/body aches or pains, congestion, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, nausea/vomiting or diarrhea, headache, loss of taste or smell, rash, feeling sick or unwell in any way.

  • In alignment with the recommendations of federal, state and local health and medical professionals, the City School District of Albany strongly encourages everyone 5 and older who is eligible and able to get a COVID-19 vaccination.
