May 10-11 COVID-19 cases

City School District of Albany

The City School District of Albany was notified Tuesday and Wednesday of 72 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. Each person is quarantining at home.

Thirty-nine of these cases involve Albany High School:

  • Six cases are associated with ninth grade. Three of these individuals were last in the building May 6. One was last in the building May 5, one May 3 and one May 2.
  • Eleven cases are associated with 10th grade. One of these individuals was last in the building May 10, two on May 9, three on May 6, one on May 4, one on May 3 and two on May 2.
  • Nine cases are associated with 11th grade. One of these individuals was last in the building May 11, two on May 10, one on May 9, four on May 6 and one on May 5.
  • Ten cases are associated with 12th grade. Eight of these individuals were last in the building May 6, one on May 5 and one on April 29. 
  • In another case, the individual was last in the building May 11.
  • In the final two cases, the individuals were last in the building May 10. 

Eight cases involve New Scotland Elementary School. All of these individuals were last in the building May 6 unless otherwise noted:

  • One case is associated with prekindergarten.
  • Three cases are associated with kindergarten.
  • One case is associated with first grade.
  • One case is associated with second grade. 
  • Two cases are associated with third grade. One of these individuals was last in the building May 9, and the other May 4. 

Five cases involve Albany School of Humanities (ASH):

  • Three of these cases are associated with fifth grade. One of these individuals was last in the building May 10, one on May 9 and one on May 6. 
  • One case is associated with sixth grade. This individual was last in the building May 10.
  • In the final case associated with ASH, the individual was last in the building May 11.

Four cases involve William S. Hackett Middle School:

  • Two of these cases are associated with sixth grade. One of these individuals was last in the building May 10, the other on May 4.
  • One case is associated with eighth grade. This individual was last in the building May 6.
  • In the final case associated with Hackett, the individual was last in the building May 6.

Three cases involve Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School:

  • One case is associated with sixth grade. This individual was last in the building May 9.
  • One case is associated with eighth grade. This individual was last in the building May 9.
  • In the final case associated with Myers, the individual also was last in the building May 9.

Two cases involve Eagle Point Elementary School. In a case associated with fourth grade, the individual was last in the building May 9. In the other case, the individual was last in the building May 6.

Two cases involve Giffen Memorial Elementary School. In a case associated with kindergarten, the individual was last in the building May 6. In the other, the individual was last in the building May 10.

Two cases involve district offices at Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center. In one case, the individual was last in the building May 10, and in the other on May 9.

Two cases involve North Albany Middle School. One case is associated with sixth grade, and one with seventh grade. Both individuals were last in the building May 6.

Two cases involve Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy. In both cases, the individuals were last in the building May 10. 

One case is associated with fifth grade at Pine Hills Elementary School. This individual was last in the building May 6.

One case is associated with Sheridan Preparatory Academy. This individual was last in the building May 10.

The final case is associated with fifth grade at Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST). This individual was last in the building May 10.

Please be reminded that schools no longer are required to quarantine individuals who in the past have been identified as contacts of a person who tests positive. We will now identify anyone within a 6-foot radius of a positive individual as having been exposed and provide notification to that individual or, in the case of a student, their parent or guardian. We will continue to report positive cases.

Health and safety procedures continue at all district buildings and on buses, including cleaning and sanitizing. We also would like to remind everyone of steps you can take to help be safe:

1.      While masks are now optional in all school buildings in New York and, in our school district, on First Student buses that transport students, the state continues to require masks for everyone riding public transportation, which includes CDTA buses that serve our schools. The district will respect the personal decision of all individuals and families regarding wearing masks in those settings where they are now optional. 

2.      Wash hands with soap and water frequently when out of your home. If you cannot use soap and water, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

3.      Don’t touch the eyes, nose or mouth unless your hands are clean.

4.      DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL WHEN THEY ARE SICK OR HAVE SYMPTOMS:  

  • Signs of COVID-19 are fever, fatigue/tiredness, muscle/body aches or pains, congestion, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, nausea/vomiting or diarrhea, headache, loss of taste or smell, rash, feeling sick or unwell in any way. 
  • Please notify your school nurse if you are keeping your child home from school with symptoms; you can find that contact information on your school’s page at www.albanyschools.org.

5.      We continue to encourage everyone 5 and older who is able and eligible to get vaccinated.
