They’re revered on the court and now, also, at City Hall.
On Monday night, Albany Common Council Members Derek Johnson and Sergio Adams, with support from President Corey Ellis, introduced a resolution of the Common Council congratulating the Albany High School girls’ basketball team on repeating as Section II Class AA champions.
The resolution was unanimously approved.
Proud family members and coaches looked on as sophomore guard Azera Gates (who delivered 10 points, six assists and five rebounds) and senior forward Shonyae Edmonds (who produced 22 points, nine rebounds and two steals) were named, specifically, for their prowess during the championship game back on March 3 when the Falcons defeated top-seeded Bethlehem 57-49.
The varsity squad, unfortunately, fell to Liverpool in the state quarterfinals the following week.
The resolution lauded the team, And Coach Decky Lawson, for their outstanding performance, dedication and teamwork and declared that their achievements and positive representation of the City of Albany and now officially recognized by the governing body.
