October is LGBT History Month, and the City School District of Albany is proud to recognize and celebrate historic contributions of members of the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBT History Month began as Lesbian and Gay History Month and was first celebrated in October 1994. It was founded by Rodney Wilson, the first openly gay public school teacher in Missouri. The month explores lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history and the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.
Coordinated by the Equality Forum, LGBT History Month each year honors 31 LGBTQ+ icons – one every day – during the month of October. You can learn about members of the Class of 2023 here.
