Nov. 20, today, is Transgender Day of Remembrance – an annual memorial honoring those have been murdered in the past year due to their gender identity or expression.
Gov. Kathy Hochul is flying the Transgender Flag on the state Capitol all day, and tonight, the H. Carl McCall SUNY Building, State Education Department, Alfred E. Smith State Office Building and Empire State Plaza will be lit pink, white and blue.
The City School District of Albany supports these efforts and reaffirms its commitment to being safe, inclusive and just for all students and staff.
According to a 2022 report issued by the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization focused on suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ youth, nearly 1 in 5 transgender and nonbinary youth attempted suicide. About three-quarters of transgender and nonbinary youth reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and nearly two-thirds reported experiencing symptoms of depression, the report found after surveying roughly 34,000 LGBTQ youth between the ages 13 to 24.
Gov. Hochul has declared November as Transgender Awareness Month in New York, and last week people and organizations around the country participated in Transgender Awareness Week.
Additionally, the last June, the New York State Education Department released this 42-page advisory on how educators can create a safe, supportive and affirming environment for transgender and gender expansive young people.
