Caldecott winner inspires Delaware Community School students

A single assignment grew into an award-winning visit at Delaware Community School!

We were honored to welcome author/illustrator Vashti Harrison to our building on Tuesday. Harrison wrote and illustrated Big, winner of the 2024 Caldecott Medal.

Harrison shared her literary and artistic expertise with our students and participated in a Q & A. After the building-wide meeting, a small group received a hands-on illustration lesson.

Our students, guided by librarian Kathryn Chiappone, showcased Big on our own Cheetah Channel news program last year so this week’s event was a wonderful full-circle moment.

"It really is a great example of how our teachers are leaders and one idea can have an enormous impact on our students," said Stacy Dobbs, Ph.D., the principal at Delaware Community School.

Harrison is the first Black woman to receive the coveted Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
