On Thursday evening, Albany High transformed into a lively hub as students from various schools within the City School District of Albany—along with staff, loved ones and community members—came together to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures in our city. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as attendees enjoyed delicious food, captivating artwork and dynamic dance performances!
Albany High students Rashad Miller and Troy Treece, joined by Abrookin Principal Shermaine Moore-Boakye, served as the emcees for the evening, setting the stage with a warm welcome.
The crowd was treated to a spirited dance routine by the talented Giffen Gatorettes from Giffen Memorial Elementary School, under the direction of My-Eisha McGill, a dedicated staff member of the City School District of Albany. The Albany High Dance Club, led by Donna Mannarino, also took the spotlight with an impressive performance, featuring a vareity of musical styles and the flags of Puerto Rico and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to sample savory and sweet dishes from around the world, such as chocolate mousse, Qablui Palau, flan, mantu, Bolani, plantain chips, shole Zard, pineapple with Tajin and Gosh-e-feel. Guests also enjoyed samples of tea, which were poured from a beautiful Moroccan teapot!
Our Advanced Studio Pottery and Sculpture students showcased stunning masks they designed and crafted in class with guidance from art teacher Thea Resila, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures around the world. We also loved seeing the artistry of our students who skillfully applied henna to our guests' hands at one of the booths!
Many student participants dressed in traditional clothing for the event, celebrating their heritage with an array of colors, patterns and styles! The photo booth was a hit, capturing smiles and memories as everyone commemorated this fun and festive evening.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Dr. Shermaine Moore-Boakye, Laquita Love, George “Cory” Nardin, Ebony LaBrew, as well as our students in the My Brother's Keeper club and My Sister's Keeper club, for their vision, leadership and hard work, which made this memorable evening possible.
We are immensely grateful for the diversity within our community, celebrating the beauty it brings to our lives, both in the classroom and beyond.
