Summer school begins Monday, July 8
The Business and Education Partnership on Wednesday honored three Albany High School seniors in this year's regional Scholars Recognition Program.
Gail Cabahug, Erin Lippitt and Harry Zay are among high school seniors from 11 neighboring counties who were nominated by their schools for outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and service to their community and school.
They were honored at a May 16 dinner and recognized in a special Times Union section May 17.
Besides lauding the students, the Scholars Recognition Program spotlights teachers who have had a significant effect on the students' education.
Gail Cabahug
From the Times Union: "In addition to being a top scholar, Gail is the Senior Class vice president, a talented musician, two-year captain of the tennis team and a very sought-after tutor. She has spent countless volunteer hours at 15-Love, Equinox and Make-A-Wish in addition to tutoring her classmates. Her thirst for knowledge is only outweighed by her desire to help. She believes education is a privilege and plans on using hers to support others."

Cabahug had this to say about the influence of teacher Margot Wyan:
“Mrs. Wyan will never cease to inspire me. She is one of the hardest-working people I know, and she does it all while bringing sunshine wherever she goes."
Erin Lippitt
From the Times Union: "Erin is an exceptional student who excels both in and outside of the classroom. In addition to pursuing a very demanding course load, she has spent many hours as a community activist. Erin is the president of the school's Key Club and co-caption of Winter Guard. Erin is a humble student who is supportive of others. Her enthusiasm is contagious and her time at Albany High will be remembered by many."
Lippitt had this to say about teacher Megan Donohue:
"Ms. Donohue has been my guiding light the past two years. I'm grateful to her for being my mentor, confidante and supporter whenever I needed."
Harry Zay
From the Times Union: "Harry Zay is a standout student whose determination and adaptability as a learner are impressive. He has a strength and passion for science and mathematics. His leadership, respect and concern for others is reflected through his activities, which include being Falcon Council president, an Anti-Defamation League member and a volunteer at the Student Help Desk and in English as a new language classes, in addition to his summer and fall internships at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Pharmaceutical Research Institute."
Zay had this to say about teacher Vincent Amodeo:
"Dr. Amodeo, being encouraging as always, would tell me to do my best. I hope I can demostrate the same qualities as he does."
An annual event, the Scholars’ Recognition Dinner is a partnership between the Capital Area School Development Association of the University at Albany; CSArch; Freihofer Baking Company; University at Albany School of Education and Whiteman, Osterman & Hanna, LLP.
The mission of the City School District of Albany is to work in partnership with our diverse community to engage every learner in a robust educational program designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for success. The district serves more 9,600 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students, including four themed academies at Albany High School.
