Albany High School social worker Peter Kantrowitz has donated gallons of blood. Literally. And on Thursday, Kantrowitz reached the three-gallon milestone during Albany High’s January blood drive.
Kantrowitz was among some 80 Albany High students, staff members and parents who rolled up their sleeves to donate blood as the American Red Cross grapples with a crisis blood shortage nationwide.
You can see Facebook photos from Thursday's blood drive here. (You don't need a Facebook account to look at the photos in the highlighed text. A window may appear that says, "To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log on or create an account,” but you can dismiss it by clicking “not now.”).
Three gallons is 24 pints of blood. And up to three lives can be saved for every pint donated.
Besides saving lives, Thursday’s donors helped raise scholarship money for the student blood-drive coordinators – seniors Alison and Elizabeth Powell. Each donation counts towards Red Cross scholarships for them.
