Aspiring professionals receive tools of the trade

Student holds up case with scissors and combs

On Wednesday, five Albany High School students aspiring to work in the beauty industry received cosmetology or barbering kits packed with tools that will help them start their own businesses.

The kits came from Mission Accomplished Transition Services, which held a series of small business workshops for students in classes of cosmetology teacher LaQuita Love and barbering teacher Jonathan Wafer. Students awarded the kits were active participants in the workshops, which began in November and were funded by the Albany Fund for Education.

The workshops enhanced what students learned in class: Students learned how to apply professionalism to their work environment and why it matters, how to recruit and sustain customers, why professionalism and presentation matter, how to deliver customer service, why integrity is important and how to set achievable goals.

Juniors Ty Payne and Jay Thomas received barbering kits. Seniors Natassia Anderson, Xhesika Azis and Isjanae Watkins received cosmetology kits. They included professional hair care supplies, electronics and more, and will help students with the startup of their businesses.

Thank you, Mission Accomplished and AFE!
