Swim classes starting; know the rules

Phys ed starting swimming

Albany High School students will have three weeks of swimming and pool safety lessons in their physical education classes starting in mid-December.

The aquatics curriculum includes age-appropriate lessons that will build student knowledge and understanding of aquatic safety and life-long skills.

Each student will be assigned to a swim group by their physical education teacher (see schedule below; classes run through March). Students need to bring a plastic bag, swimsuit, towel and flip flops/slides to school during the swim unit. Please have your student wear well-fitted swimwear that allows for completion of aquatics activities in a safe and efficient manner.  All students are allowed to wear a light colored shirt over their swimwear.

Here is some guidance on appropriate swimwear that comes directly from the City School District of Albany Code of Conduct.

Section VIII – Student Dress Code. Students must:

“Wear clothing that covers the following with opaque material: genitals, buttocks, nipples, and the area from the nipples to the bottom of the rib cage.”

Specific Activity Dress Codes:

“Certain classes or activities may have different attire expectations, such as sneakers for physical education, athletic wear including sports bras for sports practices, swimsuits for swimming…”

Students deemed by their instructors, teachers or administrators to be wearing attire that does not conform with the dress code will be asked, and then directed if need be, to change/come into compliance with the dress code before they will lose the ability to participate.

According to state regulations, there are no exemptions from physical education other than a doctor’s note for medical or religious reasons. Parents/guardians should contact their physical education teacher and academy nurse with any concerns that would limit swim unit participation.
