Donation keeps memory alive

Student operates a planer in the construction classroom

Milton E. Horne Sr.’s legacy lives on in the hands of Albany High School construction students.

Horne was a beloved teacher, coach, builder and community leader who died in 2001. And on Thursday, his wife Deven, son Milton, granddaughter (and Albany High junior) Nashea, and cousins Torrie Chapple and Eric Williams gathered in teacher Art Erbe’s construction technology classroom to see students use two large pieces of construction equipment the family raised money for, purchased and donated to the school.

Erbe made plaques and affixed them to both pieces of equipment – a planer and a jointer – to remind anyone who uses them of the Horne family’s generosity. To complete the family picture, Eric Williams is a teaching assistant in Erbe’s class and Torrie Chapple is the home school coordinator for Leadership Academy. Principal Jodi Commerford and Career and Technical Education Principal Emily Lawyer joined the Horne family members and Erbe’s class Thursday, as well.

Deven Horne decided last summer to create a fund to support Albany High’s building trades program. The Horne family donated $5,000 and received an additional $5,000 in matching funds to buy the equipment.

Milton Horne Sr. was inducted into the City School District of Albany Hall of Fame in 2010. You can learn more about him here.

We are incredibly grateful to the Horne family for these gifts.
