News of the week

  • Free Falcon jazz Friday (TONIGHT) – Stay out of the kitchen and hear our outstanding jazz ensembles from 7-10 p.m. at Spinners, located at 2 Picotte Drive. "B Flats" play 7-8:30 p.m. and "Jazzmanian Devils" play 8:30-10 p.m.
  • Attention parents of ninth graders – Your student can take part in a free college prep program that starts in the fall of 10th grade and includes tutors, mentors and help with college applications, and continues through college with scholarships, financial assistance and more. The program is 518ElevatED. Students need to apply for the program by April 30. If selected, students must attend their classes and weekly after-school sessions, take academically challenges courses, participate in community service and work with an adult mentor.   • 2024 yearbook designs sought – Attention students in grades 9-11: Design next year's yearbook cover! If interested, submit your idea here by June 13. For more info, visit yearbook adviser Amanda Weklar in room 2352 or email aweklar@albany.k12.ny.us.
  • Dance concert next month – Prepare to be amazed by student dancers performing their own and other choreographed works at the 2023 Spring Dance Concert. The show will be on May 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Learn more
  • Career Fair coming 
  • Falcons soar at Chamber Concert – Albany High musicians dazzled concertgoers with their talents on Wednesday night at their Chamber Concert. The B-Flats and Jazzmanian Devils performed, along with the Albanettes, the Troubadours and the the Select Choir. See photos.
  • Abrookin chefs raise dough for dough – The kitchen was hopping Thursday afternoon at Abrookin Career and Technical Center, where culinary students and chef Lisa Valentine toiled to prepare meals for a to-go fundraiser Thursday night. The event was a benefit for the school’s SkillsUSA program and raised about $600.

Important reminders

  • Spa Day is May 13 – Pamper Mom, a loved one or yourself with high-end beauty services on May 13 at our Mother’s Day Spa! The event will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the salon classroom. Cosmetology and barbering services will be offered along with salon services. Learn more.
  • College Zone opportunity May 20 – Students and their parents and guardians  can take part in a free pre-college program called "Entering the College Zone" on Saturday, May 20 from 9-3 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College. Students can register through Friday, May 5. Learn more.
  • Summer arts scholarships – The state Office of Cultural Education is offering scholarship opportunities for students to attend regional arts programs this summer. Complete an online scholarship application here. May 1 is the deadline to apply.
  • 'Short Play Festival' submissions sought – The Theater Ensemble is asking playwright hopefuls to submit their original short works by June 2. The festival is slated for fall 2023. Learn more.
  • Free spa services for 55+ – Cosmetology students are offering free salon services to any city residents aged 55 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays through May. An appointment is required. Learn more.
