Construction-related changes at Albany High

The following message is from Albany High School Principal Jodi Commerford.

Dear Families:

We are in the final phase of the project to rebuild and renovate Albany High School, and I am writing to update you about some changes on our school campus this fall and how they may affect your student.

New spaces

We are excited to be opening new athletic spaces that include a cardio center, dance studio, wrestling room and gender-neutral locker rooms and bathrooms.

Also, staff and students can now travel via new hallways installed on each floor between the main academic building (Building 2) and the offices and classrooms at the front of school (Building 3). These hallways provide a direct route between the two buildings.

Finally, a new concrete stairway will be in place to join the upper parking lot off Washington Avenue with the lower parking lot off North Main Avenue.

Other changes

All classes and classrooms that were part of Citizenship Academy and the original building (Building 1) will be shifted to other parts of campus while those spaces are rebuilt. Some existing spaces were renovated to accommodate those students and classes; other spaces will be used in a different capacity.

The Citizenship Academy office will be located across from the main office. The food pantry is moving around the corner in the gym hallway.

The last phase of the project includes demolishing and rebuilding the school kitchens and cafeterias. For the coming school year, this means the Citizenship/Innovation cafeteria will be temporarily located in the annex gym on the second floor and the Discovery/Leadership cafeteria will be temporarily located on the third floor across from the auditorium balcony.  We regret that use of the annex gym will affect some of our springtime athletes and are researching other spaces and resources they can use.

We know that some of the changes to classrooms and offices may be challenging for students, faculty and staff. I urge your patience through this last phase of construction that is scheduled to be completed by the 2025-26 school year. When finished, our school building will be truly magnificent.

As always, please call or email with questions. I look forward to seeing you soon!
