On Tuesday, Albany High students experienced an engaging and inspiring session focused on workforce opportunities, led by the dynamic New York State Department of Labor Commissioner, Roberta Reardon.
The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Student Government Vice President, Xavier Soto, setting a positive tone for the gathering. Senior and JROTC member, Jonathon Booth, took the stage to facilitate an enlightening interview segment. He posed thoughtful questions, prompting Commissioner Reardon to share her remarkable background and career journey.
Commissioner Reardon discussed essential topics for students, including how the Department of Labor assists the working population, tips for accessing career services and resume writing resources and the upcoming digitization of working papers. She highlighted exciting prospects in high-demand careers in health care, education, engineering, advanced manufacturing and technology. Students also learned about the New York Youth Jobs Program, as well as registered apprenticeships, which provide the incredible opportunity for students to “earn while they learn,” paving the way for jobs right after high school. Students also were made aware of the Albany Career Center, located at 155 Washington Ave. Third Floor, which is a great resources for students and parents/guardians who need career support.
Following the interview, students and faculty were invited to engage with Commissioner Reardon during a Q&A session, allowing them to delve deeper into topics of interest. As she wrapped up her time with our students, Commissioner Reardon passionately reiterated her commitment to supporting young individuals entering the workforce, reminding our Falcons that they are the leaders of tomorrow!
