Nareem Turner-Thompson began his high school career at Albany High as a violinist in the orchestra. However, after experiencing a significant growth spurt, he found it increasingly difficult to play such a small instrument. Recognizing his talent and initiative, Albany High orchestra teacher Anthony Berman saw potential in Turner-Thompson and offered him the vacant role of bassist.
Embracing the opportunity with enthusiasm, Turner-Thompson quickly learned his first piece, Waltz No. 2, over the course of just a few weeks to perform at the spring orchestra concert. This introduction to the upright bass ignited a passion, leading him to expand his skills further by learning the electric bass and studying jazz improvisation with Albany High band teacher John Halvorsen.
When asked about his musical preferences, Turner-Thompson expressed a heartfelt connection to both genres.
“I’ve really been gravitating towards jazz because of the freedom element of it and how much variety there is—but classical will always have a special place in my heart,” he shared.
The support and guidance from Berman and Halvorsen have profoundly influenced Turner-Thompson, motivating him to aspire to a future career in music. He appreciates the environment at Albany High, noting,
“The teachers here are just really great. They give you a lot of freedom and creativity and room to explore with what you want to do and opportunities to figure out what it is you want to do—and how you can take that out of high school and take that to the next level.”
On Wednesday, Turner-Thompson's dedication was recognized when he received a $500 award from The Albany District (NY) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated (ADL). This funding will allow him to participate in the Classics Through the Ages program, which aims to promote arts education among African American youth, fostering their interest and knowledge in classical arts.
As graduation from Albany High approaches this June, Turner-Thompson is excited to continue to pursue his passion for music. He plans to study music performance at Schenectady Community College and then continue on to SUNY Oneonta to study music industry.
With unwavering determination and a deep passion for music, Nareem Turner-Thompson is poised to not only pursue his dreams but also inspire future generations of musicians to follow their passion as well.
