The City School District of Albany Board of Education will consider the appointment of Albany School of Humanities Assistant Principal Glenn Westfall Jr. to the position of assistant director of health, physical education and athletics at Thursday’s meeting.
A former physical education teacher and basketball coach in Troy, Westfall has served as the assistant principal at ASH since the 2021-22 school year. Together with Principal Marie Culihan, he has been part of a leadership team that contributed to the school’s significant academic progress over the last three school years.
That included last year’s recognition as a National ESEA Distinguished School for exceptional student achievement.
In the district’s Athletics Department, he would join Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Kim Pilla in leading a program that supports 66 athletic teams for students in grades 7-12. The department also is responsible for administration of the district’s Health and Physical Education departments across all grade levels.
Westfall’s background in athletics includes a year as athletic director at The Pine School in Hobe Sound, Fla., in 2014-15. He then served as an elementary and middle school physical education teacher in Troy from 2015-19.
He served as Troy’s JV boys’ basketball coach during that time, and also has previous basketball coaching experience at the University at Albany (graduate assistant), Sullivan County Community College (assistant coach) and Watervliet High School (assistant varsity coach).
Westfall earned a bachelor’s in K-12 physical education from the State University of New York College at Cortland, a master’s in sports administration at Canisius College, and school building and school district leadership certifications from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Pending Thursday’s board action, he would begin in the new role Jan. 27. The district will begin an immediate search for his replacement at ASH.
