Day in the Life: Elementary summer school

Five students dance and sing a rhyming game

Take a look at a day in the life of elementary summer school, where on Thursday students in kindergarten through fifth grade were keeping up with reading, math, science and social studies and having a ball!

Select students from all eight district elementary schools have spent the last four weeks attending one of two summer programs at Giffen Memorial Elementary School and Sheridan Preparatory Academy. The photos are from the program based at Giffen.

There’s so much happening: plenty of movement early in the day to get brains ready to learn, and then reading, writing and all kinds of math activities and games. There’s also lots of great discussions going on ranging from the important role of garbage trucks to why it’s important to be kind to animals to what it means to be a good citizen to what do you want to be when you grow up.

The first part of the day is devoted to academics, and the afternoon features enrichment in art, music, drama and technology. Both programs started July 8 and end Aug. 9. And students are ready to take on the challenges of a new school year in September, thanks to their hard work and the support of teachers and staff!
