Giffen Memorial Elementary School will hold a virtual public hearing Wednesday at 5 p.m. to report on its status as a school in receivership.
The link to the meeting will be available here at 4:45 p.m.
Families and community members will be provided with an update on Giffen’s status as a school in receivership. Also, Principal Jasmine N. Brown will discuss the school’s ongoing plans for improvement.
When a school is identified as academically under-performing by State Education Department standards, a receiver is appointed to help it.
In Giffen’s case, the receiver is Superintendent Kaweeda G. Adams, who is given increased authority to make changes directly to the school, including changes to curriculum, staffing, budgeting and more.
The placement of a school under superintendent receivership is a consequence of it being identified for Comprehensive Support and Improvement based on the state’s accountability system under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act.
Receivership schools are required to submit a plans for improvement and a timeline to the State Education Department.
