Experimenting with candy canes

‘Tis the season for candy cane science!

On Monday, Giffen Elementary School third-graders used their skills of prediction, observation, communication and classification to conduct three different experiments with candy canes.

Take a look at some Facebook photos of the young scientists at work. (You don’t need a Facebook account to see the photos linked in the highlighted text above. A window may appear that says, "To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log on or create an account,” but you can dismiss it by clicking “not now.”)

They investigated whether candy canes sink or float in water, whether water temperature affects how fast candy canes dissolve and whether the candy cane flavor (peppermint, cherry or blueberry) affects how quickly the candy canes melt.

They also did a taste test and graphed their results.

Science teacher Rebecca Bustelos distributed extra candy canes to every student so they can show off their knowledge to family and friends at home.
