William S. Hackett Middle School implemented lockout procedures at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday following a threat made against the Albany Police Department.
Albany police took multiple phone calls Tuesday afternoon from a person who threatened violence against police officers. The caller indicated that violence would take place at Hackett. Following the initial call, police immediately informed the school and the school put security measures in place.
Law enforcement authorities responded to provide an additional security presence at Hackett and in the neighborhood. Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST) also implemented lockout procedures as a precaution.
During a lockout, school continues on a regular schedule inside, but no one is allowed to enter or exit the building.
Dismissal at Hackett was delayed until 3:20 p.m. as a result of the investigation. Hackett also cancelled all after-school programs, including the boys' modified basketball game.
Please know that the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff is a top priority at Hackett and throughout the City School District of Albany. If you have any questions about Tuesday’s incident, please contact Principal Michael Paolino at mpaolino@albany.k12.ny.us or (518) 475-6475.
