Choral students in Francesca DelSignore’s classes at William S Hackett Middle School had a master class Friday with soprano, voice teacher and rising opera star Shaunna Lucas!
They loved it.
Lucas gave students a taste of opera (including some Puccini for a student who asked her to sing in Italian). She also listened to students performing and gave them tips to help them find their unique voice.
DelSignore taught Lucas when she played flute in the Cohoes High School band. She first heard Lucas sing at the request of another student during a band lesson, and the rest was history.
Lucas went on to study at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Conservatory Music and also earned a bachelor’s in psychology at the University of Cincinnati. She took a hiatus from singing to work in human services, then returned to the stage in 2016.
Since her return, she has performed opera in numerous companies. Her recent awards include first prize in the 2022 MAP International Competition and was a semifinalist in the 2022 Music Grand Prix International Competition.
