Class arrival and departure update

City School District of Albany tree logo.

The following is an important message from Principal William Rivers:

Here at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School, we value your child’s time in the classroom. We have been working as a school community to ensure students get to class on time and are ready to learn. Students who arrive to class on-time will receive random acknoweldgements by way of Falcon Dollars for meeting expectiations! These can be cashed in at the school store during the lunch periods.

Additionally, starting next week, teachers and administrators will be assigning students to after-school detention for the following:

  • Leaving class without permission
  • Persistently late to class
  • Persistent administrative interventions

The natural consequence for missing class is going to class! Thus, students will work with our staff after school to revisit expectations that aims to reiterate the importance of instructional time.

Detention runs Monday-Thursday from 3-4 p.m.  Parents will be notified in advance if your child is receiving afterschool detention. Students will be expected to complete a reflection sheet and have a restorative conversation with Mr. Adonis (who facilitates some of our restorative practices at Myers) and to complete any work they may be missing.  If a student does not report to detention, we will call parents/guardians and it will be expected that the student attend the next day. Persistent failure to attend could result in a more progressive consequence.

As always, if you have any questions please email wrivers@albany.k12.ny.us or call (518) 485-6425.

Please have a discussion with your student this weekend about these expectations and thank you, in advance, for your support.
