First graders in Kristina Smith’s class at New Scotland Elementary School transformed plastic gallon-sized jugs into mini-greenhouses on Tuesday with guidance from our fabulous community partners at the Vegetable Project.
Talk about hands-on: Students mixed water with potting soil, used an electric drill to put drainage holes in the milk jug, filled the jugs with soil and planted seeds of cold-tolerant herbs, veggies and flowers. Every student made their own mini-greenhouse; all were placed along a sunny wall in the school yard.
Smith’s first graders are among about 500 students from six district schools that are taking part in the mini-greenhouse project under the direction of the Vegetable Project’s Bill Stoneman. Two more New Scotland first grade classes also will get their hands dirty (literally and figuratively) making greenhouses this week.
