North Albany asbestos abatement begins Friday

The following message is from North Albany Middle School Principal Andrea Piper:

I am writing to let you know that construction teams will start an asbestos abatement project at our school on Friday. Our building will not be in use by students during the summer, and this work will be completed within all state and federal regulations, and with the safety of our entire school community foremost in our minds.

The abatement project is scheduled to begin in the afternoon Friday, June 25, on the roof of the bridge connecting our main building to the academic wing. We anticipate that the abatement will be completed Saturday, and the bridge then will be taken down.

This is part of the renovation and expansion that will equip North Albany Middle School to serve 650 students in grades 6-8 with facilities that provide the same opportunities for all students as Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School and William S. Hackett Middle School.

Other abatement work will be completed over the summer, and construction on our campus will be ongoing throughout the summer. We anticipate that the full expansion of our school will be done by the start of the 2023-24 school year.

State and federal regulations for asbestos abatement require proper signage, sealing (or tenting) the area, a ventilation system to generate negative air so no air escapes the tent, and independent third-party environmental monitoring. Asbestos abatement in particular requires signs to be posted on campus in advance of any work notifying all stakeholders of the project. You will see those signs on campus this week.

If you have any questions or comments about this abatement project, please contact:

Thank you for your support as we work to provide our students with exceptional facilities.
