Construction update

The following is an important message from Principal Andrea Piper:

We have had two excellent days of student orientation this week, and we can’t wait for everyone to be together in the building for the first time next Wednesday, when the 2021-22 school year “officially” starts!  I’m writing to let you know that students will notice that our building looks a little different than it did last year – and that’s going to be a good thing!

We are in the midst of a two-year renovation project that, when completed in 2023-24, will transform North Albany Middle School into the district’s new third middle school (serving about 650 students).  The district is working to develop new enrollment plans for all three middle schools through an open and inclusive community process.  Watch for updates about this process and the work of the district’s Feeder Alignment Committee this fall.

Currently, construction is underway on new cafeteria and kitchen space.  It will be complete in April.  Workers also are already increasing classroom numbers and space, with an end date of August 2022.  The foundation for a new bridge connector was just put in place, and that portion of the building upgrade will finish next September.

Work will begin on a new auditorium in the spring, and there are improvement plans for gender neutral bathrooms and a new locker room for the gym. Mechanical and electrical system upgrades are also part of this project, as is exterior work.

Our school will remain open throughout construction.  All of the work is being completed in accordance with the New York State Education Department’s code requirements for public schools.  The health and safety of our students and employees, and a smooth return to in-person instruction for everyone, are top priorities.  With that in mind, please contact me with any questions you may have about the improvements or our school at (518) 475-6800 or apiper@albany.k12.ny.us.
