Necessity is the mother of invention

A student demonstrates a compound machine that she designed.

Do you need a lever to make moving heavy objects easier? How about an incline if you’re not up to climbing a lot of stairs?

Our grade 8 scientists successfully completed a unit on simple and compound machines and were tasked with designing and building a model compound machine that can complete an everyday task at home.

While creativity and thinking outside the box were encouraged, there was one important requirement. The engineers must include two simple machines in the project.

For the final step of the assignment, completed Thursday, each lab group had to demonstrate the functionality of their unique technology to peer, and teacher (Susan Fields) review. The students decided on a glow (something done well) and a grow (a suggested improvement) for each project.
