For the past several months, students at Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy have collected pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters to help kids with blood cancer.
All those coins added up: On Wednesday, they presented a check for $1,707 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Their efforts were part of Schuyler's Second Step Program, which teaches students about having empathy and compassion for others in their school and community.
A special shout-out to fourth-grader Jimmy Murphy, pictured in the center, who alone raised more than $1,500. He and classmates Samir Hussein (in the plaid shirt), Thierry Nkurunziza (in red), and Devante Thomas (in black) were the biggest fundraisers in the school.
Their class was treated to a pasta and salad lunch for their hard work. The class also received a certificate of thanks from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and personal thank you note from a patient.

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to work in partnership with our diverse community to engage every learner in a robust educational program designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for success. The district serves around 9,600 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students, including four themed academies at Albany High School.
