Saving turkeys with STEM smarts

Thanks to the engineering skills of first graders at Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy, many “turkeys” were saved from the Thanksgiving table.

Students in Laurie Ellis’ Innovation Lab were given the task of designing buildings that would protect their paper Thanksgiving turkeys. Using foam pieces, interlocking blocks and other materials, students had to build structures with sturdy walls that could withstand potential turkey hunters. After Ellis determined each building was sound, students drew pictures of their creations and wrote down the materials they used.

The “Save the Turkey” project was adapted for every grade, so all Schuyler students had a chance to test their engineering talents.

Take a look at a Facebook photo album of the project. (You don’t need a Facebook account to see the photos. A window may appear that says, "To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log on or create an account,” but you can dismiss it by clicking “not now.”)
