Students and teachers stand by boxes of food they collected to donate to a local food pantry

Fifth-graders in the Student Leadership Club at Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST) demonstrated their civic-mindedness on Monday as they gathered non-perishable food items they had collected over the past month and delivered them to the food pantry run by the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless on Sheridan Avenue.

Student Leadership Club is one of TOAST’s after-school clubs. Its members are former students of the club’s advisers, fourth-grade teachers Katelyn Scialdo, Jackie Taccetta and Kayla Williams. They hung signs around school and urged their fellow students to donate food for the drive. Community School Site Coordinator Shaniqua Dowdy, who is responsible for TOAST’s after-school programs, assisted with logistics.

“They came to me and we made it happen together,” Dowdy said.
